48) I'm a witch...but I don't consider myself Wiccan, for various reasons.
Yes, I know that most of you know that already; however, I have made many new LJ friends recently who don't. And I'm still sick and doped on meds and can't think of anything else super-interesting.

Date: 2006-05-07 09:43 pm (UTC)As for the witchy thing... Well, it's sort of an identity politics thing, you know? I self-identify as a witch, though I adhere to absolutely no Tradition or traditional definition of the term. I self-define my self-identity, and I don't even pretend that my definitions are static. Which can be very frustrating for other people, I know. The short version is that I'm mostly agnistic (whatever that means) with a stong atheistic bent, and for good measure, I'm an apatheist (summed up in the phrase "I don't know, and I don't care"). I'm also a blasphemer by just about every organized religion's standards. The witchy thing... Sort of came from my having a lot of respect for the self-educated, self-confident, innately subversive, free-thinking, strong-willed type in general. And that's the short version, lol!

Date: 2006-05-07 07:01 pm (UTC)I consider Pagan to be a blanket term that is too often thrown out by people who don't really understand the origin of the word. So I prefer not to use it.
I'm a witch. You don't have to be Wiccan to be a witch. More accurately, I'm a witch whose religion is grounded in Eastern traditions, and whose magic is shaped by Western ideals.

Date: 2006-05-08 05:00 pm (UTC)yeah it is a blanket term...
but it is what it is.
it just simply means - One who is not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew, especially a worshiper of a polytheistic religion
it is just a label like anything else.
and like with most labels futher explainations or additional exceptions or details are involed

Date: 2006-05-08 09:26 pm (UTC)I know you didn't say you had to be Wiccan to be a witch. However, it is common misconception, even among members of the community.
Pagan in its original meaning denoted a person of rural origins. Country folk. Since the Church was primarily an urban stronghold, the word became used to denote non-Christians.
I think Pagan has become an overused term, and in the modern sense, means "non-conformist", as much as "non-Christian or Jew".
To that end, I do consider myself part of this area's pagan community. However, that would not be the case if it were not for Summerland's unique outlook.
That's probably the crux of it all for me. A community, a group is pagan. A person isn't. A person can describe themselves as pagan, when discussing their POV, but Pagan isn't a religion.
Can you imagine the talks we are going to have when we are living together?
