interview meme thingy

So, right before leaving to go home to Dothan last week, I poked my head out of the sand and jumped on this little meme bandwagon, in [livejournal.com profile] iflie’s, [livejournal.com profile] metafrantic’s, and [livejournal.com profile] sandykidd’s journals.

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.
3. You may update your LJ with the answers to the questions (or comment to this post).
4. You may include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Since all three of the above mentioned people have never met me in RL, I think it rather fitting to answer their questions now, when I am doped on various allergy medications and more inclined to be less inhibited in my answers. Though the typos may run rampant. Thank the Gods for spellcheck!

[livejournal.com profile] iflie’s questions

1. Describe the scene of your favorite hug ever please?

When my mother died unexpectedly when I was 20 , we had two viewings, a private one for the family, and the obligatory “open” viewing. My sister (she was 15 at the time) and I did not attend the public viewing; she had been the one to find Mom’s body and simply couldn’t deal with so many people, so I stayed home with her, and several of our friends came over to the house to keep us company.

Somewhere during the night, we both broke down, just sitting in the floor of the den hugging each other and crying. Every other person in the house got down on the floor and hugged us; we were surrounded by one big pile of warmth and comfort. It didn’t matter to anyone that there was a good 5-7 years difference in ages between my friends and hers. They were all there for us that night.

2. What thing you do makes you go 'doh' that is such a 'me' thing to do?

I re-buy books. Not because “I’ve-read-this-to-death-its-falling-apart,” but because I’m traveling somewhere, ran out of books to read, and just want mind candy, so I buy another copy of something I’ve read many times before. So I don’t actually have to concentrate on it, you see.

3. Magical you would start by...[insert thing you do first when being a witch]?

Interesting question. I am a very intuitive (and informal) worker, so I tend to mix up my rituals on the fly. But I do always start by insuring the sanctity of my workspace-sometimes with a full circle casting, sometimes a cleansing- and …relaxing my shields so I can fully immerse myself in the experience.
If I am doing a high rit, then I ALWAYS take a ritual bath before hand.

4. People around you tremble when you...[insert action or mood}?

When I get really calm and deliberate in my speech. This is usually coupled with my becoming very still and… withdrawn, for lack of a better word, from the surrounding people. It usually means the feces are about to hit the air moving device in a very spectacular way.

5. What is your reason for an LJ?

Originally? Because [livejournal.com profile] discordian said I should so I could keep up with him and [livejournal.com profile] archmage. I still primarily use it to keep up with RL friends who I don’t see often, even though they’re local, and to keep up on the gossip in my favorite fandoms.

[livejournal.com profile] metafrantic’s questions

1. What thing about your body/appearance are you most ashamed of?

My upper arms. I was lucky to not have a problem with facial acne as a teen, but I did have a problem with acne on my arms, and they are covered in scars.

2. What task in your life do you most regret doing a half-assed job on, and why?

My Senior Thesis. Now, don’t get me wrong, I got a B (NO ONE got an A on their thesis), but I did half-ass the research and filled the paper with a lot of BS because I knew that unless I flat out failed I’d STILL have an A average in the class and make Valedictorian.

3. Many people remember exactly where they were when they heard JFK was assassinated. Is there a similar moment for you? If so, who was the person who died, where were you, and what was your reaction?

The day my mother died, I was hanging out with my then-boyfriend and some other friends. The whole family knew that I’d eventually show up at the comic shop, so a message had been left for me there. I called home, completely oblivious, and asked to speak to Momma, because I assumed the message was from her. My stepfather told me my mother was dead and to come home right away. Brian and the rest of the gang had to literally sit on me to keep me from driving straight home (we were all on my car), and made me wait till Brian’s mom could come pick me up. Which was probably a good thing; I doubt I’d have made it home without wrecking or getting pulled over for speeding.

4. What’s the most powerful, most lingering image you’ve ever seen? Why did it affect you so much?

When I was still in high school, I often went with my mother and step-father to Civil War re-enactments (my mother had a business making CW era garb for men and women). I was able to attend the 130th anniversary of Gettysburg. Sutler’s Row (ie the venders) was on a hilltop overlooking the battlefields. I stood in the edge of that hill one night and looked down over the fields. The only light was from the moon, the stars, and the campfires. Mist was rising from the ground; it had rained for two days straight, but it was still hot. I could hear the murmur of voices in the camps, the occasional voice lifted in song around the fire, a guitar playing softly. There was a weight to the air; moving was like walking through water. I swear I could hear the sounds of battle on the wind as it blew around me.

I had attended several other re-enactments before this, and several after. I have walked through gravesites and explored many a fort or Prison. But no site affected me as Gettysburg did.

5. What is the longest you’ve owned a single article of clothing? What was it, and why did you hang onto it so long?

I had this great T-shirt I got from Outdoor Outfitters when I was in my senior year. It had a lunar chart on the front. I finally relegated it to the bin about 2 years ago, because it had a few too many holes. I think I held onto it because of the lunar connection. Maybe. In reality, I think it’s because I hate to shop and hate to throw things away.

[livejournal.com profile] sandykidd’s questions

Q1. How would you describe the experience of being a fish?

Have you ever been in Southeast Alabama in August? The air is so heavy with moisture, it’s like you’re breathing water. You don’t stroll down the road; you push your way through the heat, and the wetness clings to you clothes and skin, mingling with your sweat, drenching your clothes all the way down to your underwear. You can feel a constant weight pushing at you from all sides, and all you can focus on is getting out of the heat and into the sanctuary of an air-conditioned building. You do your tasks, avoid the hair-trigger tempers of others, and get to your destination as quickly as possible.

I imagine being a fish would be very similar.

Q2. If you invented a game, what would its main theme be, and how would players win?
Hmmm. The theme would revolve around getting to know the players. The more information Player A gets out of Player b regarding a topic, the more points Player A gets. But Player A is limited to x amount/type of question, and if Player B can successfully circumvent the question without giving away the goods, then Player B wins all the points. Kinda like the old game show I’ve got a Secret, but more intimate, like Truth or Dare. You win by collecting the most secrets, or by not spilling any of your secrets by the end of the game

Q3. Obligatory gradeschool question: If you could be any other animal or plant, what would you be and why?

I would be a spider. I have always had a fascination with spiders, and The Weaver is one of my guardian spirits. Spiders are beautiful in their symmetry, delicate, yet at the same time deadly. They create and they destroy. Spiders to me represent life and death incarnate.

Q4. If you invited god and the devil to dinner at your house, and they both actually came, what would you serve, and how would you handle the awkward silences?

My hubby’s homemade Sangria: THAT takes care of the awkward silences!
My super-hot Curry and rice: because they’re both in a rut and could use a little spice in their lives.
My dark chocolate soup: to remind them both that every light has its shadow, and each shadow it’s light, and neither can exist without the other.

Q5. And, because I really liked asking this question last time: If you had an ironic magical power, what would it be? (please explain the irony if it's not obvious)

The ability to travel in time and affect the time stream. It’s ironic because I’m a firm believer in the idea of the connected tapestry of life, that there’s a purpose behind even the bad. What we do today affects the world many days in the future. The whole Butterfly Effect Theory. As horrible as some things in my past have been, I would not change them, because those events are what shaped me into who I am.
